Carpopeltis maillardii

Thallus tough, cartilaginous, decumbent, with upright branches to 5-7 cm high. Branching irregularly dichotomous to alternate. Branches flattened, 3-4(-10) mm wide, 2 mm thick with broadly rounded and bifurcate tips. In transverse section, cortex composed of densely packed filaments; inner cortex of one layer of isodiametric cells; medulla consists of interwoven thick-walled filaments. Terasporangia and cystocarps imbedded in the upper portion of fertile thalli. Attachment by thick holdfast to rocks, in the intertidal and upper subtidal zones.
