Far Eastern Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences
(NSCMB FEB RAS)

Since the establishment of the Institute of Marine Biology, FESC AS USSR in 1970 now A.V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology FEB RAS, the scientific staff of the institute has been developing international scientific collaboration. In 1970-1980, the Institute conducted successful marine and coastal expeditions in the western Pacific and Indian oceans with participation of scientists from Vietnam, Australia, USA and other countries. Since 2010, regular joint Russian-German cruises are conducted for studying deep sea biota in the North Pacific. In 1974, the first Soviet-Japanese symposium in biology of marine mollusks and echinoderms was held in Nakhodka, in 1979 the scientists of IMB took an active part in the 14th Pacific Science Congress in Khabarovsk and organized several sections of the Congress. A series of Soviet-Vietnamese meetings in marine biology were held in 1980, and joint proceedings of articles were published. During the USSR period, many prominent foreign scientists, as J. G. Crisp, Otto Kinne, J.D. Costlow, Thor Heyerdahl , Tadashige Habe, Ruth Turner, J.-M. Peres and others visited the marine biological station “Vostok”, actively contributing to successful development of research work there. In 1990s, the intensity of international collaboration increased and became almost global at the level of personal relations of scientists, but with the most intensive inter-institutional relations arose between NSCMB and institutions of the Federal Republic of Germany (the Naturmuseum Senckenberg, a museum of natural history, Senckenberg World of Biodiversity), the Republic of Korea (National Marine Biodiversity of Korea, MABIK; Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, KIOST), the People's  Republic of China (Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, IOCAS) and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (Institute of Oceanography, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology).

In 2019-2020, the NSCMB FEB RAS carries out 41 international agreements with 10 countries (China, Republic of Korea, Vietnam, Japan, USA, Germany, Belguim, Ukraine, New Zeeland, and Philippine). Four joint “open” laboratories (Russian-Vietnamese and Russian-Korean laboratories) successfully work under the leadership of PhD. Andrey B. Imbs, PhD. Tatyana N. Dautova, and PhD. Konstantin A. Lutaenko. The National Scientific Center is developing active collaboration with a number of international organizations, in particular, scientists of the Center have become members of different committees and commissions in the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN), in the Action Plan for the Protection, Management and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the Northwest Pacific Region (NOWPAP), in the North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES), UNESCO and etc. Various international conferences are actively carried out in the NSCMB: the Far Eastern Malacological Society (led by Dr. Konstantin Lutaenko) organized three international meetings (2004, 2014, and 2019); geneticists have carried out 10 international symposiums (Modern Achievements in Population, Evolutionary, and Ecological Genetics – MAPEEG); the conference Cell Cultures of Marine and Freshwater Animals was held in 2015); since 1990s, there occurred a series of international meetings on the problem of global changes in natural environment and climate; five joint Russian-Chinese conferences on marine biology and biodiversity were organized in 2007, 2010, 2012, 2017, and 2019; a series of Russian-German meetings on deep sea biology, international conference on nematology and other events in the Center were actively attended by our international research partners.

An important achievement of intensive international collaboration is our joint publications: since 1970 the staff members of NSCMB have published more than 900 scientific articles with foreign coauthors from 48 countries, included into the Web of Science database (over 160 from USA, over 130 from Japan, and over 100 from Germany); more than 800 articles were included in the base SCOPUS. Only in the last decade, several joint monographs were published with scientists from Vietnam, China, Japan, Canada, and the Republic of Korea (Dr. Eduard A. Titlyanov, Dr. Andrey B. Imbs, Ph.D. Konstantin A. Lutaenko).

In 2006, the National Scientific Center of Marine Biology established the Department of International Research Collaboration with the goal to help in organization of international visits, various scientific events, in visa and other support, in arrangement of document flow and the order of reports.
